Most of Kavalan people live in Hualien and Taitung, with the rest scattered in different places. The total number of Kavalan people is around 1,700.

Kavalan are known as the earliest residents in Lan Yang Plain. This is a matriarchal tribe valuing equality. Kavalan people were first recognized in history due to the invasion of Spain. During the Qing dynasty, this tribe began to decline and was being assimilated when Wu Sha established the first village in Lan Yang Plain. As a consequence, the life of Kavalan people was forced to change and they began to marry people living in Yilan. Therefore, there are many residents living in Yilan with the distinct appearance/features of Kavalan people.

The tribe of Kavalan moved to Hualien because their place was occupied by Han people. From 1803 to 1840, Kavalan people who lived in Dongshen County moved south to Beipu Village and established the tribe of Kaleoan. Among the people of Kavalan, some of them live in Nanao. In 1878, Kavalan people of Kaleoan cooperated with Sakizaya to hold an anti-Qing movement due to the invasion of Han people. This movement failed in the end and the Kavalan people escaped to the East coast where they lived next to Ami Tribe.
